Week 5

Caterpillars

Ecosystem

1. What did you learn this week?

This week I learned more about the various ecosystems, tundras, forests, deserts, and grasslands. This information was a refresh on how living and non-living things interact and work together in a specific environment. Through these ecosystems we also explored the food chains, starting with the producers proceeding to the consumers. Through this information also learning about the 10% rule of food chains, this is how much energy is retained through each level. My group also watched a video on bubble net fishing, which was very interesting to see how whales work together to retrieve their food.

2. How can you apply what you've learned to teaching in the future?

In my future teaching, I can use the hands-on activity of making food chains with my students. This is a great way for students to be able to learn about multiple ecosystems, where they are location, what animals are in each of them, and how they work together through the flow of energy and matter. The creation of different ecosystems helps students to understand the information in class and apply their knowledge through an activity.

3. What are new or remaining questions?

Through the review of this information, I still found some food webs difficult to read through the arrows. What are some ways we can make these food chains and food webs easier for all students to read and understand?

  1. Hi Natalie!
I agree that it was a great refresher to go over the different ecosystems and how nonliving and living organisms interact within them. I really liked your idea of having students engage with the curriculum and have them make food chains. Such a fun and engaging idea.
