Week 4

Table of the 5E Modeling Stages

Caterpillars

1. What did you learn this week?

This week I learned a lot about 5E Modeling. This is a series of instructional steps designed to learn science concepts with understanding. It consists of five teaching phases, each titled by a word that begins with the letter E. These being Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, and Evaluate. Above you can see the 5 different phases and the teacher's role vs the student's role within this. I had not heard about the 5E Modeling before this, so it was good to learn about these steps. We also got to briefly look at the caterpillars above.

2. How can you apply what you've learned to teaching in the future?

The 5E's are instructional steps that I will make sure to use in my own future classroom. The phases engaging, exploring, explaining, elaborating, and evaluating not only help me as a future educator but will also help my future students. This encourages students to deepen, explore, and extend their own knowledge.

3. What are new or remaining questions?

After learning about the 5E Modeling, a remaining question I have is "is 5E Modeling something all educators learn before teaching?"

Comments

  1. Hi Natalie! I also plan on using the 5E learning model in my future classroom! I'm not sure if all educators learn about 5E, but I think they should as it can be very useful.

  2. Natalie,
I thought your inclusion of caterpillars was very helpful to see due to not being able to work with them very much. In addition, I also plan to use the 5E model within my own classroom to extend my student's personal knowledge. Overall, great work!
