Week 2

Characteristics of Living Things

1. What did you learn this week?

This week I learned about the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and how it is based on three prongs, content, scientific and engineering practices, and cross-cutting concepts. The NGSS pacing is slower but the student understanding is much greater, their depth of knowledge and retention is higher. I also had a refresh of the 8 core characteristics of living things, this review was helpful for me as it gave me a better representation of what these characteristics are and how they all work together.

2. How can you apply what you've learned to teaching in the future?

Learning about NGSS will be helpful in my own future teaching as I hope to have many classroom discussions, group work, and continuous learning present. With NGSS present in my own classroom it will help students become more confident in themselves and feel as if learning is more personal to them. The anchor chart activity, used with the 8 core characteristics of living things today, will be something I hope to take into my future classroom. Anchor charts are a great tool for not only myself to complete but for my students to learn from.

3. What are new or remaining questions?

How do I navigate questions and comments from students about NGSS when I am still learning too?

Comments

  1. Hi Natalie! I also liked that we talked about the eight core characteristics of living things because I definitely forgot about those! I agree that the NGSS is going to be a beneficial part of a classroom. Anchor charts are lots of fun and are a very good visual to help students remember. Your question is definitely something I have been wondering myself! Great job this week!

  2. Hi Natalie! I had the same remaining question about the NGSS. I think it can be difficult to get students to gain the confidence to try to think deeper and more critically on these issues.

  3. Hey Natalie, I never though of the questions on comments from my students and how to work them, but now that you point it out I agree that is a concern that I have and also I'm not sure how to navigate this also. Hopefully in our lecture to come we can figure it out.
